To the editor: I have sat in silence as long as I can on the Mangino investigation.

I have to admit I often become incensed at television sports commentators. Take last Saturday’s Kansas-Missouri football contest, for example. The TV throats blistered KU coach Mark Mangino for his failure to use running plays to eat the clock late.

Early in the season, especially against outmanned mid-major opponents, Martin is more concerned with the process than the result.

Kansas’ assistant football coaches hit the recruiting trail Monday, the first day of the all-important postseason contact period, making visits to players who have already given oral commitments to the Jayhawks. Co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Bill Miller was in Hutchinson, Kan., to meet with top defensive end prospect Geneo Grissom; wide receivers coach David Beaty was in Irving, Texas, to check on running back James Sims, and defensive coordinator Clint Bowen made the short drive over to Blue Springs to visit wide receiver Keeston Terry. Offensive coordinator Ed Warinner and cornerbacks coach Je’Ney Jackson were on the road, too.

Texas outside hitter Destinee Hooker has been unanimously selected as the Big 12 player of the year.

Among the positives, Nebraska’s appearance in the Big 12 title game Saturday could provide a recruiting boost.
