STILLWATER – Markelle Martin was only credited with three tackles and one pass broken up in the official statistics following Oklahoma State’s 65-17 victory over Washington State on Saturday night but he had a much bigger impact in the season-opening win. Want proof, just ask the OSU equipment crew which had to replace the junior strong safety’s facemask midway through the game.

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State fans had been waiting nearly nine months – since Dana Holgorsen had been hired as offensive coordinator – to see the new Cowboys’ spread offense. They got what they wanted during a 10-minute span in the second quarter Saturday night as Brandon Weeden, Kendall Hunter and Company scored 21 unanswered points to propel the Cowboys to a 65-17 victory over Washington State.

From Kendall Hunter to Russell Okung, Oklahoma State has relied on its silent leaders the past several seasons. Hunter and Okung have long embodied the type of player that takes care of business on the field and doesn’t elaborate off of it. With Hunter still carrying that reputation on the offense, one Cowboys senior has developed a similar reputation on the other side of the ball.

The new-look Oklahoma State offense debuts Saturday night with six first-time starters, including quarterback Brandon Weeden and four new linemen. But the person Cowboy fans will be watching is new offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, who they hope can work the same magic that he did a year ago at Houston when the Cougars led the nation in scoring (42.2 points) and passing offense (433 yards).

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State fans should not be surprised to see a number of 18-year-old freshmen play in Saturday’s nationally televised season opener against Washington State, Cowboy head coach Mike Gundy said during Monday’s weekly news conference. Gundy says he’s comfortable in playing as many as 10 true freshmen against the Cougars at Boone Pickens Stadium.
