Call me an eternal optimist, you always do, but I’ll say it anyway: Despite an embarrassing, historically bad loss in Saturday evening’s season-opener to a Division I-AA football school, I still believe Kansas University can get to four victories this season.

KU runners at home

The University of Kansas cross country teams open the season at the Bob Timmons Classic at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday. The men’s 6-kilometer college and university race starts at 9 a.m., followed by the women’s 5K race at 10. The Jayhawks of coach Stanley Redwine host teams from Colby Community College, Garden City CC, Neosho CC, Park University and Marysville University.

Season-ticket sales to students for Iowa State football are down about 30 percent from last season, Iowa State athletic department officials said Tuesday. Officials said it’s too early to predict, however, if season-ticket sales to the general public at large also are off from a season ago. “We usually don’t finalize our season-ticket numbers until a couple weeks into the season,” senior associate athletic director Steve Malchow said.

Lodging teams on nights before home games is nearly a universal practice. Of 120 major college football teams, only Arkansas State, Boise State, Fresno State, Louisiana-Monroe, Tulane and Western Kentucky do not stay in hotels before home games, according to Register research. Kansas, under new coach Turner Gill, will break from tradition and stay in hotels before home games this season. “We’ve been doing this for many years,” said Max Corbet, Boise State assistant athletic director.
