COLUMBIA | Those who view T.J. Moe as the next great pass catcher at Mizzou are counting the games until he surpasses the reception total of Danario Alexander last year. Moe caught 13 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers’ season-opening victory over Illinois.

ST. LOUIS | Blaine Gabbert didn’t mean it as a metaphor. How could he? He’s a quarterback, not a philosopher, and if he wanted to get his Shakespeare on about where the Missouri football team was and where it is going, he probably wouldn’t do it in front of a bunch of reporters

Did Pinkel make the Washington decision? It seemed out of character for Missouri coach Gary Pinkel — a man who prides himself on sticking by his players — to have unilaterally decided that starting tailback and captain Derrick Washington be permanently suspended before his charge of deviate sexual assault was adjudicated.

Key play: On third and 6 at the Missouri 35, Illinois was called for a false start. MU’s Jacquies Smith was then called for a late hit on quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase. That gave Illinois an automatic first down and led to Derek Dimke’s 21-yard field goal that gave Illinois a 3-0 lead.

There was good news and bad news for two former Missouri Tiger football players on Friday. While the New Orleans Saints are not expected to announce their final cuts until today, two people familiar with the club’s roster moves told the Associated Press that quarterback Patrick Ramsey will be let go.

COLUMBIA | A smattering of reporters stood in front of Jerrell Jackson as he explained how he planned to play in Missouri’s season opener less than a month after breaking a bone at the base of his left thumb. Jackson assured them he could catch passes with a protective cast on his left hand. But again and again, Jackson’s gaze strayed to the doughnut-shaped mass of reporters surrounding a teammate. Jackson couldn’t see that fellow Tiger, but he knew who it was.

The University of Missouri will not allow Derrick Washington to return to the Tigers’ football team, even though there has been no resolution made public regarding a class C felony charge against Washington for deviate sexual assault. The move surprised Washington’s family, said his mother, Sarah.

Derrick Washington is being done wrong by Missouri, and he can blame Ricky Clemons.

The story about this Saturday — when Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase strolls onto the Edward Jones Dome carpet, faces a hell-bent Missouri defense and takes his first snap as a Big Ten starter — begins with the young protagonist fighting back tears.

Tony Mitchell — a top small-forward recruit out of Dallas — won't be eligible to play basketball at Missouri for the fall semester, but MU Coach Mike Anderson isn't closing off all options for later on.

In last season’s 37-9 Mizzou victory, De’Vion Moore netted 21 yards in eight carries and Kendial Lawrence lost two yards in four carries.

COLUMBIA | Missouri coach Gary Pinkel had already put the weight on his shoulders at his Monday news conference, saying three DWI arrests in August involving members of his football program were his responsibility. The same for starting tailback and team captain Derrick Washington, who was charged Monday with deviate sexual assault, a Class C felony.

A third member of the Missouri football program in a month has been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Ricardo Ratliffe, the No. 1-rated junior-college player in the Class of 2010, will be suiting up in a Missouri basketball uniform this season. “I can inform you that Ricardo Ratliffe is enrolled at the University of Missouri,” Dave Reiter, sports information officer for MU basketball, told The Star on Friday. “And eligible to play.”

Senior reserve cornerback Munir Prince has feeling in his arms and legs, and Missouri team doctor Pat Smith said Thursday night that the prognosis for Prince’s recovery is “favorable.” After suffering a blindside hit on punt coverage at football practice Thursday afternoon, he was knocked out and suffered “transient quadriplegia,” or “a temporary loss of feeling and movement in the upper and lower extremities.”

COLUMBIA | Missouri’s final full scrimmage of the preseason ended in frightening fashion Thursday, when reserve cornerback Munir Prince was wheeled off Faurot Field on a stretcher, leaving coach Gary Pinkel shaken and Prince’s teammates kneeling in prayer. By early evening, Pinkel relayed word from University Hospital that Prince had feeling in all his limbs.
